Jena (OTZ/P.P) - An international success was written in the books by Claudia Günther of USV Jena and the German National Youth Team for Orienteering, currently on a year-long exchange in Seattle (USA).
As the leader in Washington State's orienteering league, Günther went as the favorite of her host schol, Bremerton High School, to the Championship for U.S. high schools in Athens, 100 km southeast of Dallas. She ended as the US High School Champion.
On the first day, Claudia Günther had to beat her toughest opponent among the 25 participants- Holly Kuestner from Lakeside School in Washington state. In the 7.2 km race, Kuestner clocked in at 44:37 min. and Günther at 51:33 min. In the second race across 6.9 km, the Jena native succeeded in taking the almost 7-minute lead away from Kuestner and gaining a 35-second lead. In the second race, Günther (44:08 min.) beat Tori Borish (47:37), Catherine Olsson (50:33) and Kuestner (51:39) - all from Lakeside High School.
In total, the competitor from Jena USV finished in 1:35:41 hours, beating Kuestner (1:36:16) and Catherine Olson (1:45:02) to become the new US High School Champion.
