The WIOL expedition to the US Interscholastic Orienteering Championship in Texas ended with very good results for the participants from Washington State. The big news of the weekend is that Claudia Guenther, an exchange student from Germany attending Bremerton HS, won the individual Varsity Girls title, edging two-time returning champion (and WIOL participant) Holly Kuestner by a mere 35 seconds over the two days. (Read the story about Claudia's win from her home town newspaper (in German). Our thanks to Steffen Loesch for sending this to us.) (English translation by Megan Harris) Tori Borish placed fourth and Anna Urbanova fifth (in other words, WIOL girls took the top five places out of 26). |

After a fourth place run Saturday, Huw Stradling (Redmond) moved up to second place in Varsity Boys for the two days, finishing just behind the same individual that he did last year. Ethan Barnes also improved his position in the results. |

Gabrielle Lindquist hung on to her incredible margin from Saturday to win
the JV Girls title.
Becky Forgrave was second and Tracy Whelen was third.
Katherine Ratliff took seventh.
This is the second year in a row that WIOL girls swept the medals
in two different categories,
this year in Varsity and JV. Among the JV Boys, Walla Walla's Matt Skorina placed fourth and Lakeside's Max Maxwell seventh. |

Danielle Spencer (EAS) had a strong third place in Intermediate Girls,
posting the second fastest time in her class Sunday.
Right behind her, in fourth place, was Woodinville Monterssori's
Dana Breseman, just 114 seconds behind after two days
(Dana had the second fastest time on Saturday).
On Saturday, Bonnie Gilbrey (EAS), avoided the "one control curse" that has plagued her during the WIOL season to turn in the third fastest time among the Intermediate Girls. However, that evening she was struck with a bout of stomach flu and didn't start Sunday. A real trouper (and sportsman), she recovered sufficiently by Sunday afternoon to join the others cheering at the finish. She was heard to tell one finisher from another school "Hurry! He's going to catch you!" and the second "Hurry! You can catch him!". She is looking forward to the WIOL championship next weekend.
The WIOL boys running in the very competitive Intermediate Boys category had a tough time.
Jorden Lindquist (Woodinville) placed fourth,
and Andrew Spencer (EAS) twelfth. |

For the first time in four years, Woodinville Montessori did not win the Intermediate School Team championship. The teams from La Porte and Channelview, both from the Houston area, were quite strong and did well. [more details when we get the official final results]
On the other hand, many of the adults along for the ride did well. Among those bringing home medals: Macy, Sally, John, Ken, Sue, Rick, and Mike. After handily winning the first day, Eileen elected to take a "Sporting Withdrawal" the second day after losing time due questionable placement of one control.

A few WIOL paricipants passed up the opportunity to compete in the Interscholastic Championship, working instead on their national ranking and potential berths on the US Team to the Junior World Orienteering Championship. Doing well with this were Kelsey Breseman (1st, F-20), Marissa Roecks (3rd), and Ryan Breseman (2nd M-20). |
